Arachnophobes beware! (and other issues)
I had a new bathroom in May 2023. I deliberately delayed posting a review until approximately the 18-month point. The sales staff are great. The products are lovely. My bathroom looks beautiful but here are the downsides:
1. The bath panel does not reach the floor. There is a good 2cm of gap. The fitter told me it was supposed to look like that - it cast a shadow and this was a desirable thing. I questioned the sense of this given that I was sure a whole bunch of spiders would be hanging out behind the bath panel. He assured me this would not be the case and told me that beneath the lip of the bath panel it touched the floor, so the only thing hiding back there would be pipes. However, I slid my hand underneath and also a ruler and of course, unsurprisingly, there was clear space all the way back at one end. I have seen many spiders pop their heads out of this space and they are very pale. I know this look - it means that they have been living in the dark - I'm very familiar with all this from having horses - you do a spring clean of the stables and a load of very large very pale spiders come tumbling out who have been hidden in the shadows for the whole year.
I spoke to the sales lady at DW Burns a couple of weeks after installation and she looked into it for me. She eventually explained that the panel is supposed to be that way but she gave me some ideas about how I might fill it - such as foam tubes from Amazon.
2. At about a year in, the shaving point in the bathroom which was built into the new cabinet stopped working. I didn't even believe this as a possibility and called out an electrician thinking there was something wrong with my electrics. He confirmed there was nothing wrong with the electrics but the shaver point had gone already! He said it would be a rather a complicated and expensive job because the shaver point was built into the cabinet and thus into the wall. So ever since then I have had to charge my toothbrush in the kitchen. Not ideal.
3. At 13 months in, the bath plug was stuck shut and the basin plug was stuck open. I called a plumber who explained to me step-by-step what was wrong and replaced the fittings with plugs with metal fixings. The originals had plastic mechanisms, which he explained to me do break quite quickly.
The plumber also explained to me that in terms of the bath panel, that it ought to touch the floor, and the story about the fall of shadow for aesthetic reasons was somewhat exaggerated. He did say that it is very hard for a fitter to get the panel just on the floor as it should be. He will be coming back to fill it in such a way that it should be suitably sealed and I will have no more concerns about marauding arachnids.
The attached picture shows my 'Critterkill' spider trap next to the gap between the bath panel and floor. Note how wide that gap is!
So overall, whilst the bathroom looks great, there are some quite serious niggles which are going to cost me to fix. Style over function!
